Lacquer Art Atelier: Japanese Gold Leaf Decoration

Conducted by Japanese contemporary lacquer artist Shoko Taruma, this two-hour workshop will feature “Haku-e” technique. It is one of the methods of Japanese lacquer art that decoration is achieved by the application of gold or silver leaf to motifs painted in urushi (natural lacquer).

1/ Overview of Japanese decoration methods

2/ Introduction of tools and materials

3/ Demonstration of “Haku-e” techniques

4/ Design of patterns

5/ Urushi and gold leaf applications


Each participant will gain hands-on experience with urushi and gold leaf applications on a pair of chopsticks and a piece of chopsticks rest.
