Urushi Design & Innovation by Taiichi Kirimoto & Kohei Kirimoto Exhibition period 1.6 - 30.6.2019

Kirimoto Family in Wajima, Ishikawa prefecture of Japan, has been engaged in the lacquerware making for over 200 years since the late Edo Period. At the beginning of Showa era, the family started to specialize in carving wood materials of lacquerware.

Taiichi Kirimoto succeeded the family business as the seventh generation. Before returning to Wajima, he majored in Industrial Design at the university and practised interior design. He resumed wood craftsmanship as he returned and started designing for lacquerware, furniture and architectural fixtures.

The business is currently breaking out from the mould with a new contemporary range of goods that’s got everyone’s attention. Kohei Kirimoto, the son of Taiichi Kirimoto, and eighth-generation heir of the family, is the brand director of the new collection, “Iki“, inspired by human skin. “Iki” in Japanese means “breath“, “stylishness“, and “freshness“.

This Exhibition Preview x Talk will explore the future of lacquer art (Urushi in Japanese), and its applications in products, interior and architectural designs.

About SOIL

Founded in 2012,  SOIL aims to promote crafts through the inspiring history, culture and humanity behind them.

We offer a new perspective and experience to traditional crafts.

In collaborations with designers and craftsmen across different

disciplines and cultures, we hope to create better craft designs exposed to alternative methods and materials. Collaboration spreads our design sphere of influence and breaks down walls with new approaches.
